How reading can support local authority targets

We have been looking at how our projects and the reading services that libraries run support local authority performance, national indicators and Local Area Agreement targets.

We've developed some resources which will be available to download very shortly. They are:

a summary of how our projects support local authority agendas
a powerpoint, first presented at the Public Library Authorities Conference in Liverpool in October 2008, on the new local authority performance regime and how libraries can demonstrate the contribution of their reading services to local authority priorities and targets
a suggested 'route map' for libraries to use to get recognition for their work in the new local authority performance context
a 'route map' which focuses on work with children and young people

We are developing a training course to help libraries use these tools and demonstrate the contribution their reading services make to improving the outcomes for people and their local communities.

A new website where young people creatively engage with reading and words goes into the final stages of development in November. groupthing.org is our major new initiative that we are developing with young people. Six Book Challenge resources

Welcome to the page for people who have purchased materials from us to run the Six Book Challenge 2009 in association with Costa.

We want to make the process as easy as possible for you so we will be using this page to provide you with lots of guidance and templates. As a start, please see the list of downloadable pdfs on the right and choose those which suit you. We've also provided several templates in Word which you can adapt for your own purposes. These are mentioned where relevant in the guidance pdfs.

Two that you are definitely going to need are the Registration form and the Participation record. Both of these are designed to help you keep accurate records before and during the Six Book Challenge.

We've also produced a Key dates planner, to indicate how you might want to run the Six Book Challenge from January to June - but please feel free to adapt this for your own local planning.

The Six Book Challenge 2009 partnership powerpoint contains key findings from the first year of the national Six Book Challenge in 2008 but again you can adapt this to include your local highlights and contacts.

We've also provided some Tips for library staff that you can use to brief frontline staff in libraries and a Six Book Challenge 2009 press template for local press work.
We will be sending out email updates which will alert you to new items on this page and to other information you need to know.

Finally, The Six Book Challenge 2009 website www.sixbookchallenge.org.uk
will be launching shortly. This will promote the Six Book Challenge and share people's experience of taking part in and running the Challenge.

We would like to offer Chatterbooks reading groups the opportunity to read and review The Boy in the Dress by David Walliams, illustrated by Quentin Blake. The book was published at the beginning of October and is aimed broadly at 8-12 year old readers. There are 70 copies in total available, and they will be allocated on a first come first served basis. To make a request, please e-mail me with your contact details and the number of books you need for your group. We would also love to get feedback on the book from the children once they have read it!
